Since ClearCorrect® is completely metal-free, patients enjoy a considerably more comfortable journey to a straighter smile than if they chose traditional braces. That said, some soreness from time to time is normal, especially in the hours following the transition to a new set of aligners. The good news is that there are a few easy (and effective!) steps you can take to alleviate any discomfort you’re feeling. Here are a few!
1. Switch to Each New Aligner Before Bed
Oftentimes, patients are tempted to remove their aligners when their teeth are sore. However, this will only prolong the sensation. The best thing to do is transition to each new set right before bed. That way, you aren’t tempted to take them off, and you’ll sleep through a large portion of the adjustment period.
2. Use a Cold Compress
As your teeth begin to move, your gums can swell, causing a bit of discomfort. An easy way to ease inflammation is by placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek for 10 minutes at a time. In addition to temporarily numbing the area, this will help ease swelling and soreness.
Tip: You can also use a towel-wrapped ice pack or sip on cool water if you don’t have a cold compress!
3. Avoid Crunchy Foods
In short, eating hard pretzels, popcorn, tortilla chips, and other crunchy foods will only exacerbate your symptoms. So, steer clear of snacks like these immediately following the transition to a new set of aligners. Instead, opt for softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like plain yogurt, oatmeal, and bananas.
4. Take OTC Pain Medication
Finally, if nothing else seems to be working, you can take OTC pain medication. Just make sure to follow the directions on the label and never take more than the recommended amount. After a day or two, soreness and discomfort stemming from the movement of your teeth should dissipate completely.
