Valentine’s Day is a time to make memories. Whether it is with your spouse of 25 years, a boyfriend or girlfriend of only a few months, or even a group of friends who want to celebrate together, this holiday gives everyone a chance to express their love in countless ways. But one memory you will want to avoid is a trip to the emergency dentist’s office. This is why it’s important to consider these four tips to avoid a dental emergency when preparing for an evening with friends, family, or the one you love.

Keep Sugar-Free Gum in Your Pocket or Purse

Depending on your evening plans, the menu might include sugary and/or starchy foods. If so, you’ll want to make sure that you keep some sugar-free gum on hand to reduce any excess food debris and sugars from your teeth.

You can quickly (and easily) start chewing on a piece after dinner or dessert, giving your mouth a chance to recover from the recently consumed foods, effectively lowering your risk of tooth decay, cavities, and ultimately, a problematic toothache.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene on the Day of Your Date

Before rushing out the door to pick up your date, make sure that you practice good oral hygiene. This means using a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoridated toothpaste, dental floss, and an antimicrobial mouthwash to clean your teeth and gums. Doing so will ensure that your mouth is in the best condition to consume a flavorful meal without the added bad bacteria.

Drink Plenty of Water

Coffee, tea, soda, and even red wine can dry out your mouth and leave stains on your pearly whites. To avoid feeling embarrassed during your date as well as reduce your chances of cavities and/or gum disease, make sure to drink plenty of water.

This hydrating beverage not only keeps your salivary glands working properly, but consuming it allows these glands to better neutralize acids found inside the mouth that might otherwise damage tooth enamel.

Choose Dairy

Whether you’re ordering an appetizer or enjoying a home-cooked meal together, make sure there is plenty of dairy available on the table. Cheese cubes can be a great accompaniment to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Not only is it good for your overall health, but it also serves to strengthen tooth enamel, which is helpful when trying to avoid possible breakage or damage to your smile.

While working to ensure that the night is perfect, keep these tips in mind so that you spend this time with each other and not at the emergency dentist.
