Dental insurance is a valuable tool to make dental care affordable for you and your family. However, dental insurance works a bit differently than the medical insurance that you are used to, so it can be challenging to navigate at first. That’s where we come in. We are happy to help you learn more about dental insurance, how it works, and ways you can maximize your benefits. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your plan, don’t hesitate to ask!

How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance form

When you pay your monthly premiums, you gain access to your dental benefits. This is what gives you discounts on your dental care. Every plan varies a little bit, but most plans’ coverage looks something like this:

  • 100% coverage on preventive treatments, like checkups, cleanings, and routine X-rays.
  • 80% coverage on basic restorative procedures, like dental fillings.
  • 50% coverage on major restorative procedures, like dental crowns and dentures.

In most situations, cosmetic procedures are not covered by dental plans because they are considered to be elective. The idea is that by attending your cleanings and checkups, you can prevent the need for restorative treatments in the future, which aren’t covered at as high of a rate. However, there are still some key points you should keep in mind:

  • Most dental insurance plans are renewed at the beginning of the calendar year, and your benefits will not carry over.
  • You must meet your deductible before your insurance company will agree to pay more for any minor or major restorative procedures.
  • Your annual maximum is the designated amount of money provided to you by your insurance company. This is the most they will agree to pay out in a single year. If you don’t reach this amount, the remaining money is returned to your insurance company.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Health and dental insurance cards

Medical insurance and dental insurance have quite a few differences between them. The biggest one is that dental insurance is focused more on preventive care. That’s why most plans include complete coverage for cleanings and checkups. This way, patients can avoid the need for complex procedures, like root canals and extractions, down the road.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

When you are choosing a dentist, it’s important to find out if they are in-network or out-of-network. Here is how this works:

In-Network Coverage

When you choose an in-network dentist, this means that your dentist and insurance company have a contract to offer services at set fees. Choosing an in-network dentist is the best way to maximize your benefits. At RnR Dentistry, we are proud to be in-network with the following dental insurance providers:

  • Aetna
  • Ameritas
  • Anthem
  • BCBS
  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental
  • Principal
  • United Concordia
  • United Healthcare

Out-of-Network

Even if your insurance provider isn’t listed above, this doesn’t mean that you are out of luck when it comes to your coverage. We still likely accept your plan and can file paperwork on your behalf. This way, you can still get the same high-quality care at an affordable price.
