TMJ Diagnosis & Treatment
To confirm whether you have a TMJ disorder, Dr. Rivera will meticulously examine your jaw and feel it as it moves. This way, she can identify your jaw’s range of motion and pinpoint any specific areas of discomfort. She may also take digital X-rays of your jaw and teeth to get a clearer picture of the root cause of your pain. Once she has enough information to make a proper diagnosis, she can determine the best course of TMJ treatment for you.
Occlusal Splints & Nightguards for Bruxism
TMJ pain is often caused (or worsened) by bruxism, a condition where you chronically grind your teeth and clench your jaw. Since it usually occurs while sleeping, it’s impossible to consciously stop it. Luckily, Dr. Rivera can make you a custom tray called a nightguard that creates a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, minimizing jaw strain as well as wear on your teeth. She can also provide occlusal splints, which work as nightguards but also gently adjust your jaw’s natural resting position. Wearing your occlusal splint as directed may eventually provide permanent relief from your TMJ discomfort!
BOTOX ® Injections
While BOTOX ® is mostly known for reducing signs of aging in the face, it can also treat TMJ disorder. When injected into certain areas, it temporarily paralyzes the surrounding muscles. This can smooth out facial wrinkles, but it also calms overactive jaw muscles that place too much stress on your TMJs. Not only can BOTOX ® injections provide immediate relief for TMJ pain, but they can also prevent nocturnal teeth grinding.
